Sip, Swap, and Shop For A Cause

That shirt you have.  That one that you can't ever quite seem to toss into your bag of Goodwill donations and can't ever seem to take to the Buffalo Exchange and, most importantly, can't ever seem to actually wear and thereby justify keeping it?

New plan.  Take it and its similarly-neglected, hanger-dwelling friends to the Downtown Women's Center Clothing Swap and trade it for something you actually will wear.

Whose-a-whatser?  DWC2011SummerSwap

This Saturday, June 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Downtown Women's Center.  Entry is $12 at the door (or $10 online).  You bring a bag full of clothing.  In exchange, you receive an empty bag which you can then refill by "shopping/swapping" for the clothing donations brought by others.  If all that wardrobe refreshment leaves you needing some actual refreshment, there will be wine and beer (and, though less-drinkable, a raffle and sweet tunes from a live performance by Rachel Goodrich).

Leftover items and all proceeds will be donated to the DWC to ensure that each day the women of Skid Row are greeted with warm food, a safe community, and supportive services.

Dance Your Pants Off for a Cure

So despite all your bitching and moaning about this or that issue, let's face it: You haven't gotten off your ass to volunteer or do good since your parents made you rake leaves for old people when you were in high school. Lucky for you then that you have been given the opportunity to both do good and be entertained.

Abel Charrow pledged to run six marathons in six months to raise money for the Los Angeles chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. That's 157.2 miles in half a year, which I guarantee you is more than you've run in the last decade. (Evidently the fate of the first marathon runner has not worked as a deterrent for poor Abel)

But destroying his knees to destroy cancer isn't enough; Nay, Abel has organized a rockin' benefit concert at the funky Bootleg Theater. With performances by Kiev, The Outdoors, The Cotillionaires, Fatty Dearest, and Wil Donegan and the Artests, there is some definite funkitude happening.

Well, you say, I like both music AND fighting cancer. But you're cheap. My, then, do I have good news for you! How much will this night of dancin' and fundraisin' cost you? $20? $15? $10? Nay, good reader, for $8 you can tackle cancer, support something positive, and shimmy until you can shimmy no more.

Get out there. Live long. And prosper.
